Cheer quietly

By Rick Gibeault, Calgary Herald

Re: "Heartbreaker; Dream of defending Grey Cup at home dies in Regina," Nov. 23.

I watched the Stamps-Riders game on Sunday and saw the Riders fans screaming whenever Calgary tried to run a play. I know this has become the practice in most stadiums in the league, including Calgary, but the Riders fans seem to be the best (worst?) at this. What makes people think this behaviour makes them great fans? It just shows a lack of confidence in their team to win, without disrupting the other team's signal calling. It should be a penalty to the home team for unsportsmanlike conduct if the other team cannot hear the quarterback. I believe there used to be a rule in place for that, but it is never called.

Only if the announcer instigates it does the referee have discretion to call a penalty. It shows a lack of class and I hope the Grey Cup game will have a fan base that is diluted enough so both teams will be able to hear their quarterback. If not, I will be cheering for the team who has to overcome the Neanderthal factor.

Rick Gibeault,

Calgary

I just realized something, this will be my first game at Taylor Field West where I don't have to hear the incessant announcing for fans to make noise for their defence. Nice.

lol, too funny.

Perhaps he could look into watching some chess matches too.

To the Calgary fans who post here, you can't honestly tell me that this guy isn't an embarassment to your fanbase.

This maroon is a for real reporter? i'm actually stunned.

would he prefer that they play in an empty stadium?

does he also think the the home team should be penalized if they don't have a dome and it's windy out?

No doubt. Here's someone who watches tennis and golf. I always thought it was brutal when tennis players got mad at crowd noise. Suck it up buttercup.

Team sports = noise, especially football.

Worst?

This is the "worst" example of attempting to instigate something that I've come across.

The Stumps must actually like the "Visitors" locker room.

"Arse-clown" is a compliment!

OMG. How does someone who has never watched football feel compelled to give their opinion publicly?

"has become the practice in most stadiums in the league"?????

"It just shows a lack of confidence in their team to win"??????

What can you say about those statements other than JUST WOW. Since when does a loud stadium constitute lack of confidence? And there are no louder stadiums than in the playoffs - played in the stadiums of the best teams in the league for that season. How do those fans have a lack of confidence? And just because the atmosphere is Regina is the loudest, it doesn't match the atmosphere of the most intense NFL cities or US college football. That's no offence to our fans. I just don't understand why other cities aren't showing the same support of their team. I also 100% truly believe that stadiums like McMahon and BC Place are quieter in the long run because of the announcer yelling for the fans to make some noise. I think it would be embarrassing and in the end dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd. And I've always wondered why there isn't a flag every play where those announcers are yelling after the visiting team has broken huddle. But this genius wants to make it an infraction for the home crowd to cheer? What a moron.

Again....

JUST WOW
