New 32,000 Stadium for Riders - Gaining steam

Mentioned on CTV SASKATOON...but unidentified source...that Fiacco and Co. will have an announcement soon regarding new 32,000 stadium for SSK.

Mentioned prov. govt giving Saskatoon lot of dough for bridges, and that "another big project announcement soon."

Regardless if happens soon or not, glad to see this province gaining steam and wanting to have the best.

32k eh?... I would have thought at least 35k minimum. I hope it's a true bowl shape and not just two stacks along the sidelines. With empty endzones looking onto parking lots.

I would love that. I hope they do it right where it could be expanded if needed.

Did anyone else catch Hopson at halftime saying there would be some announcement in about two weeks and that the city and governments have been really good.

I hope this is true - we need to get this up and going soon! We have the money, we have the fans, we have the support. If we wait any longer it's going to keep getting more expensive!

I've debated this with a few people already and none of us could come up with a fool proof plan. Where would the stadium go?? Is the CP railyards big enough for the stadium and the necessary parking? What about where the current practice field is now? Is that big enough or have they chosen another spot?

Yep, something like a miniature Rose Bowl would be sweeeet.

Curious as to the preference for bowl type seating. End zone seats are garbage, especially when they don't go up high. The current upper deck has some of the best views in the house, its not as bad as one would think.

I had to chuckle at the letter in the sports page where the writer said Rider fans are so great and we deserve a new stadium. He said he will be one of the first to give if the Riders have a raffle to raise money.

I was thinking, a couple of raffles, a few bake sales , get all the grannies to donate some knitting and we should have enough for a new stadium.

It'd be cool if it was even partially covered.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but our government could buy us a brand new stadium in 5 years on the interest they're paying on our provincial debt.

I sure hope this news article is true... Man would that be a breath of fresh air.

Id love a mini version of commonwealth. That is a beautiful stadium, those mofos dont deserve it. haha Anyone know if the plans would be to bring mosaic down and build at taylor field or go to another site? I really hope it stays at TF.

    Thumbs up

I really think that with all this team has given to the people of Saskatchewan over the last 98 years that a new stadium for everyone is in order soon. A multi user facility that can have a bubble style roof on the field portion for winter use.

I know that federal/provincial/municipal money can go to many other causes. A new stadium may not make money for the province however all players, team staff, restaurants, hotels, etc., have been paying personal and corporate income tax for almost a century, that has to count for something.

Governments support institutions of all kinds and tax money for all public and private sectors is definitely a continual balancing act. The economy is very good right now, and will be into the foreseeable future.

Costs are only going up, if not now, when.

I don't like idea of a bowl stadium at all - especially that size. The great thing about all sideline seating is there is not a bad seat in the house. End zone seats are not good - and if/when there are a couple spells to go through, those are going to be a very tough sell.

I question whether or not that this major project announcement isn't about major upgrades to Mosaic Stadium which has been talked about at length in the papers. Hopson in the Community Sun on the weekend (I know, not the best reference point but) said that it was very unlikely a new stadium would be built but rather, an overhaul of TF would be done (seating, elevators, concession upgrades, etc). That's what I would expect to hear with this announcement - and makes sense if seating capacity were to be expanding to 32,000.

    Thumbs up Retrofit acceptable

I believe a retrofit would be acceptable, and keep most people happy. There are some parts of the stadium that could be kept and some parts that would require demolition, and rebuilding.

I am sure the our stadium could be reengineered and given a facelift. There is enough to work with. (New seats would be nice though.)

Tear it down and build on a new site. Its time to move on. I can't believe they want to spend millions upgrading when new is now within reach. Its not just about the Riders, its for everyone that uses Mosaic now and those that could use a better facility.
