  • Bombers Shopping 4th & 5th CFL Draft Picks

Kyle Walters is looking to shake up the 2019 CFL draft board, per sources.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have let teams around the league know that one or both of their first round drafts picks are available via trade.

The Bombers currently hold the fourth and fifth overall selections in this year's draft thanks to a trade from last May. That deal saw Winnipeg flip their first-round pick in 2018 to B.C. for the Lions first-round pick in 2019 along with a swap of second rounders.

Trading one or both first-round picks makes sense for the Bombers for a number of reasons.

For one, this year's draft class is deep, albeit without many elite-level prospects. This means that teams may value the quantity of picks they have higher than the quality of those selections. Some of the players that will be available in rounds two and three would be considered first round talents in other years.

The Bombers are also unlikely to have much space remaining under the salary cap.

Paying out two first-round draft picks both of whom could demand salaries in the $90,000 to $95,000 range is a lot for a team that has already spent a lot of money heading into the 2019 season.

Finally, Winnipeg doesn't have any immediate roster needs. The Bombers have their Canadian starters locked down especially if the league reduces the minimum number of national starters from seven to five and respectable depth at most positions on the roster.

    Yeah.

And if you think they're suffering, try being the Lions or the Eskimos.

Calgary must be hurting too with BLMs mega deal. Bombers have socked enough money away for an elite IMP receiver and then are likely spent out. Two first rounders means no elite receiver for us.

The best part is, because everyone knows you guys are a little desperate, not many are likely to bite and offer a great deal to the Bombers. Might be a case of "This will be fun to watch, I am okay picking at 7"

Minimal SMS increase and reduction in starting Canadians. I suspect 2 of a few reasons.

Dickenson pretty much admitted they were at or close to the cap now. Would be interesting what would happen if a guy like Singleton got cut and was ready to return to the CFL

IMO, Singleton would come back to Calgary for several reasons and likely the biggest would be because of his sister and keeping her happy with the continuity thing.

Calgary would be trading asset for future picks, or outright release of players to make it happen. Wouldn't be surprised if we see teams "cheating" by going over the cap but staying under the $100k limit.

Maybe we should sign Durant just for the amusement of trying to trade him to the Bombers for a pick.

Do the Bomber's have enough cap space to pay him the $70k signing bonus though?

                  It is a requirement.

Smart move if the ratio is dropping. Try and get as much as you can for those picks now.

In future they should reduce the draft to four or five rounds.

I think his comment also took into account keeping some money aside for if/when he returns. Hufnagel and Dickenson are as smart as they come.

Yup, I said before that if it drops to 5 I would probably shop my picks every year.

Am I missing something here? If the # starters does drop to 5, won't most teams be "set" at Cdn. starters? So how does this increase the value of these picks, other than they are the 4th and 5th overall?

And even if the overall # of Cdn. roster stops drops too (which is pure speculation at this point), why reduce the draft to fewer rounds? More picks means more competition at training camp which should mean the quality guys rise to the top.

if we take the Canadian out of the CFL this process will become history and so will a lot of interest in the CFL at the grassroots level.

While I don't disagree, buuuut. The quality of NIs has not been consistent and the beasts are gone south leaving us with players who are only starting because of a passport.

The CIS level needs to do a better job of grooming and training these kids for the next level. Tired of seeing the marshmellow players.
