  • Jim Popp interview today

I listened to the podcast of a Jim Popp interview on the Mike Richards show. Some comments on how QBs played out in free agency

-common knowledge they went after Bo big time. Said it was tough seeing other signings while they waited. In the 2nd their 2 big targets were Mitchell and Walker and added one.
-when asked if they pursued anyone else Popp talked about Vertleib being the agent for all those QBs. Said even before free agency hit officially Reilly was going to BC and Harris to Edmonton. The message when inquiring was not to even bother.
-Looked to bring in Lulay as a veteran presence but he retired instesx
-Signed Bridge to add to the competition

interesting that Harris was going to Edmonton prior to FA. I mean Reilly was given permission to negotiate.

Well, if the commish wants no tampering to be taken seriously, that comment should warrant a phone call at minimum

Sounds like the agent Vertleib played quite the symphony, leaving the Riders and Argos bidding for Bo Levi while probably knowing full well he was staying put in Calgary (he knew where everyone was else was going, after all). His butt should be banned from the league.

Vertlieb did what’s best for his clients. There absolutely no reason for the league to do anything about him

Nothing wrong with him playing with the deck his is dealt. IMO, nothing wrong with him answering question if someone calls. He is an agent and between a rock and a hard place with that, and can't really report them and it is tough to say wait till the 14th on his end. If he is making calls, that is different. GMs on the other hand, they can't (shouldn't) be having the conversations at all. Jones was raked over the coals for a crap rumor on Johnny, so this should get the same or more, because a source is actually known. Hervey was fined for it. Time to dig into this.

They need to start having a restricted FA window. February 1st or 8th (pick a date a week or 2 in advance of free agency) the calls can start. Nothing gets finalized till the 14th though. It lets these calls that everyone knows happens happen and puts everyone on a level field.

Was a good interview. Can be listened to here:

Also of note, that's Popp's take on things, especially Harris to Edmonton. That one wasn't a fait accompli as much as Reilly to BC was, but it was still likely. As well, it doesn't take a genius to realize that Ray's chances of coming back with the Argos are basically over.

If Harris was confirmed to be going to Edmonton before free agency hit, he needs to fire his agent. Everyone got paydays except him (relative to what he was making)

The CFL needs to add the legal tampering period like the NFL has because we all know what is going on.

...The suckers that were hypnotized by the sound of the sweet symphony can only blame themselves...
...The outcome was obvious before the 1st note was struck...So why play along???...

I am liking your post because of your clever musical references. I love it when people continue a theme!

He had the same agent as Reilly and Mitchell. To be slotted in with a nice payday but less than those two is perfectly fair.

With Reilly and Bo getting $700+, I don't know if I agree that Harris getting $550k is a nice payday? He could have easily got $625k minimum? Especially signing a 2 year deal.

In essence he facilitated tampering. Ban his butt.
